What Is an OEM Part Number? A Complete Guide

Every part on your vehicle has a name — "brake disc," "grille," "control arm" — and a number. The name tells you what it is. The number tells you exactly which one, out of every version of that part the manufacturer has ever built, fits your specific vehicle.

That number is the OEM part number, and it is the single most reliable piece of information you can give a parts seller, a mechanic, or a data system when you need the right part the first time.

An OEM part number is the unique identifier a vehicle manufacturer (the Original Equipment Manufacturer) assigns to one specific part. It is the authoritative reference — every other way of describing that part, including every aftermarket equivalent, traces back to it.

Why the OEM number is the anchor, not just a label

A part's name is descriptive, not precise. "Front brake disc" could mean dozens of physically different parts depending on the vehicle, trim, engine and model year — different diameters, different mounting patterns, vented versus solid. The OEM part number removes that ambiguity. It refers to one exact specification, full stop.

This is why every other identifier in the aftermarket — every IAM (Independent Aftermarket) brand's own part number, every marketplace listing, every cross-reference table — is ultimately built by mapping back to an OEM number. It is the anchor the rest of the system hangs off.

Where to find your OEM part number

On the part itself

Most OEM parts have the number stamped, etched, laser-marked or printed directly onto the component, often on a label or a flat machined surface. If you are replacing a part and want the exact match, this is the most reliable source — it describes the part you actually have, not the part the system thinks you should have.

Through your VIN

Your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) encodes the exact build specification of your vehicle — model, trim, engine, production date and factory options. A dealer parts counter or an official parts catalog can use the VIN to look up the correct OEM number for a given part position, which matters because two vehicles of the same model year can require different part numbers depending on how they were optioned.

From a parts catalog or dealer

Manufacturer parts catalogs (often called EPC — Electronic Parts Catalog — systems) let you browse by vehicle and diagram to find the exact part and its number, without needing the physical part in hand. This is the standard route when you're sourcing a part you don't already own, such as after a collision or when building out a new listing.

OEM part number vs. manufacturer part number vs. reference number

These terms get used loosely, and the overlap causes real confusion. Here is the actual distinction:

OEM part number specifically means the number assigned by the vehicle manufacturer — Toyota's number, BMW's number, Ford's number. Manufacturer part number is the broader term: an IAM brand like Bosch or Brembo also has a "manufacturer part number" for their own equivalent part, they just aren't the vehicle's OEM. Reference number or OEM reference number usually just means "the OEM number, used as a lookup key" — the same thing, described from the angle of "the number I'm cross-referencing against."

Why OEM numbers change: supersession

Parts get revised. A supplier changes, a design gets a running production fix, a material spec is updated — any of these can trigger a new OEM part number for what is functionally the same position on the vehicle. When that happens, the old number is marked superseded by the new one.

This matters more than it sounds. A superseded number is often still valid — dealers may still hold old stock, and the old number may still appear on the vehicle's original documentation — but the manufacturer's current, orderable part is the new number. Treating supersession as a one-way street ("old number → always order the new one") is usually right, but not always: occasionally an older number was the more specific, correct one for an unusual configuration, and the "newer" number is actually a broader replacement covering multiple older variants. Good parts data records supersession explicitly, in both directions, rather than silently picking one.

A part's OEM number is not necessarily permanent. If your catalog only stores the number a customer originally searched, you can end up serving stale data the moment a manufacturer issues a supersession — which is why OEM number records need an explicit, source-verified supersession chain, not just a static lookup.

OEM number, but not an OEM part: co-registered numbers

Sometimes the exact same physical part is sold under more than one valid OEM number at once — not because one superseded the other, but because it's shared across sibling brands in the same corporate group, or across regional markets. A Nissan part and its badge-engineered Infiniti equivalent can be the identical component with two active OEM numbers, neither one superseding the other. This is usually called a co-registered number, and it's a distinct case from supersession: both numbers are simultaneously current, not one replacing the other.

Why accurate OEM number data matters for parts sellers

If your catalog has the wrong OEM number, or a superseded one presented without context, a customer can order a part that looks right and does not fit — a return, a bad review, and a support ticket, for a problem that was avoidable at the data layer. Accurate OEM part number data, including verified supersession and co-registration, is the foundation everything else — fitment, cross-reference, technical specs — is built on top of. Get the number wrong and every downstream fact inherits the error.
