TecDoc Data Quality: What to Verify Before You Trust It

TecDoc is the standard structure the European aftermarket uses to organize fitment data, and that leads a lot of people to treat "it's in TecDoc" as the same thing as "it's correct." It isn't. TecDoc defines the format the data is organized in — it doesn't audit the accuracy of what thousands of individual manufacturers and distributors put into that format. Understanding the difference is the difference between catching a bad fitment record and shipping the wrong part.

TecDoc standardizes how fitment data is structured. It does not guarantee that any individual record in it is accurate — that depends entirely on the supplier who submitted it.

Where TecDoc records actually go wrong

Four patterns account for most of the real-world errors people run into:

Stale supersession chains

When a manufacturer replaces a part number, that update has to propagate through TecDoc via the original supplier. In practice, this lags — sometimes by months, sometimes it never happens at all. A TecDoc lookup can point confidently to a part number that was superseded years ago, with no indication that a newer, correct number exists.

Missing or inconsistent fitment qualifiers

Make, model and year range are rarely the whole story. The same model year frequently ships with multiple engine variants, transmission types, drivetrain configurations or regional specs, each needing a different part. A record that's missing those qualifiers — or defaults to the broadest possible range instead of the specific one — can look like a confident match while actually being wrong for a meaningful share of that model's production run.

Duplicate and conflicting entries

Because thousands of independent suppliers submit into the same catalog structure, it's common for overlapping part numbers to exist for what's functionally the same component, sometimes with conflicting specs between them. Without a way to reconcile which entry is current, a lookup can surface the wrong one of several plausible candidates.

Category and attribute inconsistency

Suppliers don't always classify parts or fill in technical attributes the same way, which means the same type of part can carry different attribute completeness depending on who submitted the record — one entry has full specs, a functionally identical one has almost none.

Why this matters more than it sounds like it should

None of these are exotic edge cases — they're the normal behavior of a catalog built from thousands of independent, unaudited submissions. For a single manual lookup, a sharp-eyed buyer might catch an obviously stale entry. At catalog scale — thousands or millions of SKUs pulled through automated processes — nobody is manually sanity-checking each one, and a wrong-part order isn't a data footnote, it's a return, a customer complaint, or in some categories a genuine safety issue.

What to actually check before you trust a record

A practical verification pass, in order of leverage:

Cross-reference against the OEM's own catalog where one is available — this is the closest thing to ground truth for whether a number is current. Check whether a supersession chain is current rather than several revisions behind — a chain that dead-ends is a signal the record hasn't been maintained. Confirm fitment qualifiers are actually present — engine code, transmission, production date range — rather than accepting the broadest range as correct by default. Treat unqualified records as unverified, not as universally fitting, until you've confirmed otherwise.

The pattern to watch for isn't "TecDoc is unreliable" — it's specific, checkable weak points: stale supersessions, missing qualifiers, and duplicate entries. Each one has a concrete way to verify around it.

Where this fits into a bigger data pipeline

TecDoc is one input into a fitment database, not the final word on it. Treating it that way — a valuable, standardized starting point that still needs cross-verification against OEM sources and consistency checks before it reaches a product page — is what separates a catalog that's occasionally embarrassing from one buyers can actually trust.
